Domestic Adoption: 10 Questions to ask potential agencies

  1. How long has the agency been licensed? How many years has the agency been working in domestic adoption?
  2. How many children did the agency place last year?
  3. Does the agency provide family references?
  4. Does the agency have a complete list of all fees throughout the adoption process and when they are due? Get ALL expenses, not just agency fees.
  5. How does the agency make plans for both the birth parents and the adoptive parents?
  6. What is the wait time before placement?
  7. Are most of the agency’s placements open, semi-open, or closed (confidential)?
  8. What information will you receive about the child’s birth family and medical history?
  9. What pre-training and post-placement services does the agency provide?
  10. What are the agency’s requirements (age, marital status, religion, finances, health, criminal background, etc.)?
